The archaeological heritage of medieval Arbër, bears outstanding value!
Since the second half of the XIX century, foreign travellers and scholars visiting North Albania were astonished by the settlements, churches, cemeteries, the inherited dress, local habits, and customs, almost unchanged, settled on an extraordinary mountainous beauty. The first archaeological collections of artefacts were created in Shkodër, by the Franciscan Father, Shtjefën Gjeçov, and in the National Museum of Archaeology in Saint Germain-en-Laye by the French cultural advisor, Alexandre Degrand.
Since then, the site has been explored by Albanian archaeologists, from 1960 to 1984, and again from 2008 by Albanian-French archaeological research teams. Scolars, restaurateurs and students from all around Europe, supported by the local community of the mountains of Dukagjin, discover ever since the Arbër’s settlements, now diapered under the rocks and dense forests. The extraordinary finds, rank the heritage of Arbërs known as “Komani Civilisation”, among the most prominent communities in the history of medieval Balkans. To learn about their cities and dwellings, their faith and religion, the architecture and decoration of their churches, their dresses and jewelleries, the weapons they used, their crafts, trade, agriculture, and livestock, visitors must go up in the mountains, at the “Arbër’s nest”, and sail through the rivers they used to sail.
All of these are accessible and could be visited through the organized tours, arranged every weekend, during the months of July and August; a very suitable period, since archaeologists are in terrain and can guide tourist visit of the site.
